Geeta was born on December 15, 1988 in Balali village of Charkhi Dadri district, Haryana1. She is the daughter of Mahavir Singh Phogat.

Phogat won the gold medal at the Commonwealth Wrestling Championship held in Jalandhar, Punjab between 19 and 21 December 2009.
