Early life

Sam Manekshaw was born on 3 April 1914 in Amritsar, Punjab, to Hormizd Manekshaw, who was a doctor.

Military career

Manekshaw joined the Indian Army in 1934 and was commissioned into the 1st Battalion, the Sikh Regiment.
